Nigeria: Emir of Kano's convoy attacked; 6 dead; 4 arrested; boko haram suspected

The Emir, wearing a silly hat, was attacked with his convoy on Saturday afternoon, January 19, as he returned from a koranus recital competition. The gunmen fired from motocycles. His driver and several guards were killed in the attack which also left the monarch's two sons injured
Yesterday's attack was carried out less than 24 hours before the one year anniversary of a coordinated bomb attacks by boko haram in Kano on January 20, 2012 which left over 180 persons dead. No group, however, had claimed responsibility for Saturday's attack

Bayero, 83, was flown to the UK alongside his two injured sons for proper medical treatment after a congregational preyer was held against the prevailing insecurity at the Kano Central moske. However, Kano State Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso who paid the emir a sympathy visit at his palace shortly after the incident, disclosed that the emir was in good health
Four suspects have been arrested in connection with the attack on the convoy of the Emir of Kano, Alhaji Ado Bayero, it emerged yesterday. The deputy governor of Kano State, Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, also confirmed the arrest to AFP yesterday but declined to give numbers. A security source said on condition of anonymity that boko haram was suspected
