Syria siege goes on because Assad’s men are too frightened to lay down arms

Besieged, hungry, plagued by desertion and short of ammunition, by rights the surrounded soldiers in the Moshaat military academy north of Aleppo should have surrendered long before the weekend’s final assault on their positions
Some fear death at the hands of vengeful Free Syrian Army koranimals if they attempt to surrender. Others are more frightened of their own officers, Alawite commanders whose savage brand of discipline involved having potential defectors beaten to death by their comrades
